This story picks up twelve summers after the events of "The People of the Longhouse" and The Dawn Country." The epic story takes the reader to New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Ontario six hundred years ago. Five tribes were locked in warfare, yet the violence led to one of the most unbelievable alliances in the history of America, The League of the Iroquois: a confederacy of five nations whose ideas on government would literally change the world.

The Iroquois nations remain in fiery conflict. The cannibal sorcerer who leads the People of the Hills, Atotarho, is plotting to set into motion a devastating battle that threatens to destroy the Iroquoian world. His warriors spread fear and death wherever they go, burning villages to the ground and taking captives.

There are only five people who are brave enough to challenge Atotarhp: Odion, Wrass, Tutelo, Baji, and Zateri: They were sold into slavery after being kidnapped as children, are now grown and have forged a desperate alliance that just might be strong enough to stop the evil madman.

This book is full of exciting events. If you like any of the authors' other books this will be another that you can't miss. It is a great story, a story about wars and a story about peace. It will catch you and take you through it. There is even a love story in it. This is the third book in a four book series. I can't wait until the next one is here. Although I haven't read the first two, I will be doing that in the future. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves to read about the history of this nation's great Native Americans. An awesome look at what this country was like before the white man moved in. Enjoy.
