I did not expect to be so mesmerized by an eleven-year old girl
with an abrasisve attitude. What a joy this book is.
Honey Finch and her mother, Nettie, have been alone since Honey's
father died at an early age. Travelling from one place to another
constantly with no roots, they end up moving in with her father's
parents, who are virtually strangers. Getting settled down in a
new place is not easy for Honey, who has always had more freedom
than she should have had.
Going to the new school in Silvertown is difficult. Honey only wants
people to like her, so when a boy goes missing she tells the police
that she knows where he is. Then when she finds the body of the
missing boy on the path through the woods to school...well, one
thing just naturally leads to another. Then there is the dirty mutt
that decides to adopt Honey and follows her everywhere.
Cross manages to maintain Honey's distinctive voice throughout the
story and gives us a cast of compelling characters unlike any others.
I cried and laughed intermittently as I read this story. It was
a very emotional journey for me. Honey Finch is so sympathetic to
me that I just want to take her in and adopt her. She reminded me
of Huck Finn as she cussed and smart-mouthed her way through the
story.
Cross also writes as Geoffrey Knight and A. J. Ryan, and is definitely
on my favorite author list.
