In spite of
the subject matter of this novel, it is a feel-good story. Don DiMarco
enjoys life...he has a family he loves, a comfortable lifestyle,
and interests that keep him occupied. Like all of us, he also thought
he had time. Then, when he is faced with a terminal illness, he
realizes that there will not be enough time to do everything he
wanted to do in his lifetime. This is a fear we all share, but Don
decides to make the most of every minute that he has left. At the
urging of his wife, Don makes a list of the five things he most
wants to do. He sets out to accomplish each one and to strengthen
the bonds of love with his family and friends.
This book is a testament as to how we should all live our lives
every day, if a bit unrealistic. It is doubtful that a person suffering
the end stages of cancer would be physically up to doing all the
things that Don does, especially since some of the things he does
would take a great deal of physical stamina and strength.
The story is
certainly inspirational, though, and gave me plenty to think about.
How am I going to live the rest of my life?
Manchester has just the right touch to make us feel that all of
Don's accomplishments are a real possibility, and that we should
strive to live our lives to the fullest every day. The future is,
at best, uncertain.
