Good book. I enjoyed Coake's third person writing style. It made
me feel like I was a fly on the wall.
After the death of his son, Brendan, and his subsequent divorce
from his wife Chloe, Mark Fife has moved on with his life. He thinks.
Then on a cold snowy night, his fiancée, Allison, away at
a friend's house; he falls apart.
That night he receives a call from his ex-wife coming from their
old home on Locust St. He slaps the phone shut refusing to return
the call. But he's stir crazy. After a short grueling trek to a
local convenience store to buy some staples for the night, he has
locked his keys in the house and has to break the window to get
back in. He fixes a drink and then another, and so on until he relives
his son's death and sinks into a stupor.
And then it happens. He begins the journey back, back to the house,
back to ex wife and her desperate attempt to bring back their dead
son.
Very well written. It gets to you and you're drawn to the action.
I am not sure how I feel about the ending, yet. You will need to
judge for yourself. But, if you like a little suspense in your drama,
this one's for you. Good read on a rainy night.
