“Safe
Haven” is basically Katie’s story, but it’s
also the story of Alex, a handsome widower who owns
a grocery store and has two small children, Josh, 8,
and Kristin, 5. Katie adores
the kids, and is far more interested in Alex than she’d
like to admit.
But
she doesn’t fool her next-door neighbor, Jo.
Jo told her she was a counselor of sorts, a grief
counselor. She helps people
to accept their losses and begin to live again.
She senses something in Katie that needs her
help. She has coffee with
Katie and worms her way into Katie’s confidence.
She learns that Katie has a past that she is
running from, or maybe a someone in
that past from whom she’s fled.
Finally,
Katie tells Jo her story, all of it.
She didn’t mean to tell her all of it,
but once she started talking, she couldn’t stop
until the whole story was out.
She told her about Kevin, her husband that beat
her. That was whom she was
hiding from. She had tried
to leave twice before, and Kevin said he would kill
her if she tried it again. It
took her more than a year to complete her plans to get
away where he could never find her.
Safe
Haven is a story that includes a heaping helping
of violence, madness, romance and even a bit of the
paranormal. It’s the
story of a woman who had the courage to get out of an
abusive marriage and make it on her own.
The characters are fully human and are so realistic,
it’s hard to believe they are entirely works of
fiction. The plot goes from
romance to violence, so you never know what’s
coming.
