James
Aden gets a job as a deputy land agent working for Earl
Leghorn, the owner of Rumshott, one of the finest estates
in England. Read how he copes with the foibles
of the aristocracy, strange tenants, the vagaries of
wildlife and the ways of tourists as well as falling
in love with a co-worker.
This
book is the first of a trilogy and hovers midway between
fiction and autobiography in the manner of Nicholas
Rhea’s Constable series or the classic vet books
of James Herriot. It is just the sort of
thing to relax a person after a stressful day or while
travelling, being a series of anecdotes where nothing
too bad happens and there is a fair bit to amuse. The
book promises to be hilarious indeed
it says so on the cover but humor is not something
that can be quantified and I would describe it more
as mildly amusing. If you are a fan of TV series
like Downton Abbey and wonder what life is like in a
stately home these days, this may be the book for you.
It is certainly informative and unlike many such books
the tales have the ring of truth about them, not being
too over the top. I certainly enjoyed reading
about how a great estate is run and what it must be
like working for people at this level of society in
the modern era. This is one to recommend
to all visitors (and would-be visitors) of stately homes.
