Passion V. Arrogance
A Dana & Goliath Story of Wine, Women, and Wrong!
by Margaret E. J. Broderick
You can’t read Passion V. Arrogance: A Dana & Goliath Story of Wine, Women, and Wrong! by Margaret E. J.
Broderick and not get angry. Broderick uses this book to tell of her ongoing struggle with bankers and how that
struggle destroyed her dream of operating a winery as a small business. The winery did open and did produce wine.
It was the first woman-owned winery in the nation, and it was set for international growth. But medical troubles,
financial backer troubles, and finally troubles with the bank revealed that she and her business partner were not
being taken seriously, partly because they were women and partly because they were in a fledgling business. Lawsuits
and personal decisions later, they closed their winery and continue to struggle with their legal battles with the
bank.
Though Broderick deals with all of this with blatant honesty and some humor, it is still a disturbing process
to read about. Her journey to the end of the book is not resolution but resolve. She is even more committed to her
struggle and to her own skills as an entrepreneur. She also offers advice about avoiding some of these pitfalls if
you want to venture into owning your own business, especially if you are a woman.
Though written in a conversational style, Passion V. Arrogance: A Dana & Goliath Story of Wine, Women, and
Wrong! is still not easy reading. You do come away with admiration for these women’s struggle with institutions. |
