Tales from Q School
Inside Golf's Fifth Major
by John Feinstein
Read by the author
The best sports books give fans something they can't experience for themselves - a professional's breakdown of what
goes into the game, or in-depth personal stories of what it's like to actually be a participant. Tales from Q
School does the latter with cover to cover stories about life in the annual PGA qualifying tournament - Q School.
It's fascinating reading, even if you're not a golfer (and I'm not), because Q School is more a rite of passage,
with all that means in terms of hopes and dreams and drama and emotion, than just another golf game.
In golf, unlike most sports, getting from the minors to the majors and staying there is strictly about
quantifiable results... and maybe a bit of luck. You earn -and keep - your PGA card strictly through winning or
finishing high enough in the money on a regular basis. Fail and you're automatically back to the lesser tours and
Q school, having to score high enough to qualify for a return. Doesn't matter if you're a past Masters winner or
the hottest of hot shot kids; fail and you're back in Q school.
Almost everyone's been there and everyone has a story, with Feinstein suggesting there are more legendary tales
attributed to Q School than any other golf event. Things happen there that just don't happen elsewhere, like the
player who hit his first drive well, but only 100 yards before it went sharply left, his next 100 yards... then
sharply right. His club face had collapsed, with no replacement available. All of it in a pressure cooker where one
bad shot that leaves you one stroke over the number to qualify, will change your life for the next year... and
maybe for a lot of years after.
The author reads the audio version himself, with a natural storyteller's cadence and an underlying wry tone that
suits the stories very well. You may never play Q School, but you'll finish this book knowing a lot about what it's
like for the people who have, and empathizing deeply with them all the way. Recommended. |
