The Mormon Way of Doing Business
How Eight Western Boys Reached the Top of Corporate America
by Jeff Benedict
read by the author
Whether or not you are a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (aka Mormon) The Mormon Way
of Doing Business demonstrates how consistently applying simple, practical principles - including a focus on
honesty, family and service - can help sustain you in business leadership positions. Without being preachy, author
Jeff Benedict explores some basic and fundamental aspects of membership in the Mormon church, such as serving a
full-time mission, paying tithes, and living by the law of chastity and the Word of Wisdom. The Mormon Way of
Doing Business also demonstrates how observing these practices enables these leaders to be more effective in
their professional and personal lives.
A hallmark of the Mormon Church is a focus on the family, and this audiobook does not depart from that tradition.
Benedict not only explores aspects of business life from the perspective of the 5 CEOs who are interviewed, but
also takes the time to enlist their wives' viewpoints. The emphasis on the family and its interaction with
business life is certainly a unique way to look at big business. While it is obviously difficult at times for these
corporate giants to balance home and family, it is evidently easier since their priorities were clear and
well-defined prior to making it big.
One of the most interesting parts of the book is the detailed description of how the events of the 9-11
terrorist attack on the World Trade Center were handled by these executives. As you listen, it’s hard to imagine
being in that situation where no protocol exists. Yet through their experience as bishops and stake presidents in
the Mormon Church, it is evident these men were well trained on how to react in a crisis. Although a reader has no
knowledge of how other companies dealt with the events that day, in this particular circumstance The Mormon Way
of Doing Business is certainly admirable and worth close examination.
In a church where excellence is routine among the leadership, there is no doubt that there is much to learn from
