Mechele Hughes, an exotic dancer, went to Wasilla, Alaska to look for some easy money. She
got that and more—3 men who fell in love with her. All of them stated that they were
engaged to her. They even all lived together at some point in their lives. That is until
one of them, Kent Leppink, was murdered. It was alleged that Mechele asked her fiancé number
two, John Carlin III, to do the killing for Kent’s insurance money.
Ten years elapsed before a trial even began for the murder of Kent Leppink. Prosecutors had
to try to prove that Mechelle and John were in a conspiracy together to rid of Kent. In ten
years, lots of changes could and did take place. Mechelle allegedly cleaned up her act and
dedicated her life to her family and charitable causes.
Deadly Angel was well written despite a lack of eyewitness accounts from the State of
Alaska and the Alaskan Police. Most of the information was obtained from court documents, which,
while very important to true crime stories, in this case did not provide a very hands-on account
of the investigation.
The story itself is very soap operaish—a stripper who befriends three men and does
not correct the rumors about her being engaged to them all. One of them is murdered for
insurance money, allegedly by one of the other men, urged by the stripper fiancée. Ten years
go by and the suspects finally are arrested and go to trial.
