America’s foremost
authorities on birds and nature, Donald & Lillian Stokes, created
a wonderful collection of bird songs of Eastern and Western America.
The vocal displays of over 648 birds are contained in this set of
Eastern (3 CDs) and Western (4 CDs) bird songs. An MP3 file version
is also included for use on IPod or MP3 player.
This audio collection is intended to be used along with the book,
The
Stokes Field Guide to the Birds of North America, also
by Donald and Lillian Stokes.
The collections are organized by bird types such as warblers, grebes,
and owls. More experienced birders will be able to focus on the
small differences in the songs of birds such as warblers, while
even inexperienced bird watchers (such as myself) will easily learn
the difference between the greatly varying songs and screeches of
bird types such as owls.
Recordings of each bird species in this collection are long enough
to hear variations of calls for that species; recordings per bird
species are approximately 15 seconds in duration.
As a non-birder who had a ‘birder’ parent, I was somewhat
intrigued by the idea of reviewing this audio book. Listening to
these songs and calls made me feel very “in touch with nature.”
I found myself wishing I could find some good observation posts
in the habitats of many of the bird types. The owls – many
of which I’ve heard only in movies – were the most fascinating
to me. Highly recommended for birders, nature lovers, and anyone
seeking a new ‘green’ hobby.
