Philip Yancey has written a number of books and articles about the
Christian faith. In this book, he travels the world to learn how
faith keeps itself going and growing. He found that it is the strongest
in times of adversity. In the good times, people relegate faith
to the closet, pulling it out only when things fall apart. The harder
the times, the stronger one’s faith grows. Those who worship
on pain of death for doing so have the strongest faith.
During his
travels, Mr. Yancey spoke with people from all walks of life, fathers,
mothers, former prostitutes and Chinese Christians who would be
imprisoned or killed if the Chinese government found out about their
faith. Former prostitutes who accepted Christ saw in their faith
a reason to get out of prostitution and have a better life. Some
left the life for good, but, unfortunately, many returned to prostitution
for the money. If money meant more to them, what good was God? Apparently,
money was their god. “For the love of money is the root of
all evil.” (1 Timothy 6:10 KJ)
Personally,
if it weren’t for God, I wouldn’t be alive now. He has
brought me through some very rough times virtually unscathed. He
may not give you riches in cash, but He will provide all you need.
He will not give you everything you want. I’d rather die rich
in friends than to own the universe and everything in it.
What good is
God? He’s your best friend. However, if you walk away, He
will let your worst enemy possess your soul. Listen to “What
Good Is God?” and learn how good He is for yourself.
