Most people who
enjoy the Dr. Who TV series will have seen Dr. Who and the
Daleks and probably Daleks Invasion Earth. Starring Peter
Cushing in the lead role these are the only two examples of
this series on the big screen that you will have seen, possibly
on a Bank Holiday in the afternoon. But actually more films
than that have been made, and very many more have almost been
made. None of them achieved the success of these two films,
and this book sets out to explain why.
This is another interesting and surprisingly readable“unofficial
and unauthorised”Telos guide to an aspect of this series.
As with all the others it is a fascinating piece of social
history, and to understand the“why”behind the
failures (and the successes) there is plenty about the feelings
towards the series at whatever time the films were to be made.
From Douglas Adams’bash at creating a film to a late
80s James Bond transatlantic action hero Dr. Who, usually
it is the case of the wrong idea at the wrong time made by
the wrong people. Some of the would-be films sound rather
good (if mostly not much like Dr. Who as we know it) while
others sound terrible and are amusing at least to read about.
Anybody interested in the show and TV history would enjoy
this book, which is another one you can dip in and out of
so is ideal for that coffee table, even if there are no pictures.
Which given the nature of the subject is perhaps not very
surprising.
