Why
does a boomerang come back? How does a compost heap work? Why
does sweat smell, and what exactly is a calorie? Science is
all around us, and this book takes the mystery out of many of
these everyday but baffling puzzles.
This is a surprisingly readable and easy book to get stuck into.
Divided into sections about food, the kitchen, around the house,
our bodies, the outside world, and the garden, each of these
chapters is further divided into short sections on a topic such
as the four listed above. The author has a style that is easy
to read, and the subjects chosen are all either relevant to
daily life or are things to wonder about, such as the boomerang
or why sheep don’t shrink if they get wet. This is not
an illustrated book, but there are various helpful diagrams
to aid with understanding anything best shown with a picture.
I found myself dipping into it at odd moments, and therefore
it would make a great present for anybody who wants to stop
a teapot dribbling, understand more about batteries or the different
types of light bulb, among many other things. Absorbing, informative
and best of all easy to understand.
