If you enjoyed coloring
The Menagerie, here is the sequel; a whole book of glorious
birds to color. There are thirty-one to choose from, all drawn
in the detailed, intricate style that colorists associate
with these authors, who have drawn the pictures in many of
Michael O’Mara’s wonderful coloring books.
Just like its predecessor, this book is almost 11½”
square with a foil printed cover that attracts the eye. The
paper is bright white with bold black lines and the pictures
are fortunately only printed on one side, so you can use what
you like to color them. If you are using pens or paints, it
is a good idea to put a sheet of paper underneath so there
is no transference. Most pictures finish well away from the
spine, but a couple don’t, although usefully the book
does lay open flat due to a crease near the spine, enabling
easier coloring of any hard to reach parts. All the pictures
are drawn in black, but there are a few simple colored shapes
on each one, usually vegetation of some kind to form an attractive
background. Birds include old favorites like peacock, macaw,
eagle, puffin and hummingbird, as well as more unusual choices
like Queen Victoria’s riflebird and blue-footed boobies.
As with the animals in Menagerie, every bird in here is a
real species and in life has a particular set of colors, but
less colorful species like the raven, swan and penguin tend
to lend themselves to becoming more colorful fantasy versions.
Pictures are detailed and mix feathers with patterns for a
beautiful effect, ideal for framing, although they don’t
have those handy perforations for easy removal. This minor
gripe aside, this is one of the standout coloring books of
2016.
