This handsomely illustrated hardcover book would make a wonderful gift for the teacher in your life. This is a visual history of the teaching profession with insights into the work of famous teachers, as well as taking a look at teachers in print and on the screen.

Starting at the beginning in antiquity, the book takes a look at the profession prior to 1800 in the first chapter, followed in subsequent chapters by the 19th and 20th centuries before dealing with the present. In between are short chapters consisting of a couple of pages that look briefly at academic dress, poets who were teachers, and famous modern champions of education. Within the individual sections are pieces on education in different countries and during times of unrest, such as the world wars and Depression, as well as looking at the evolving role of the teacher due to social change. This is an uplifting book, concentrating on the best of the education system and concentrating on pioneers and those who altered the profession for the better. There are photographs and illustrations on every page, showing what these people looked like, wore, and the world they taught in. From Greek philosophers to Maria Montessori, Goodbye Mr Chips to Harry Potter this is an attractive book that should grace any educator’s coffee table.
