Edgar
Allan Poe: An Adult Coloring Book, by Odessa Begay, is
a book geared toward adults, young or old. At 9.8 inches high
by 9.8 inches wide, it feels more like an art book than a coloring
book, and the beautifully detailed hand-drawn pen and ink drawings,
each centering on a theme from Edgar Allan Poe’s works
along with excerpts, is sure to keep you happily entertained
for hours at a time. The drawings cover both sides of the sheets,
and a few of them spread across two pages. The paper stock is
heavier to accommodate gel pens or colored pencils, if you prefer
them like I do.
Odessa Begay uses eerie fantasy and symbolism in an expert technique
that reflects the depth of Poe’s tales of woe and loss,
rendering the settings, motifs and details of each chosen piece
in her unique creative way. Included are drawings that revitalize
the essence of Poe’s meaning in “The Tell-Tale Heart,”
“The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” “The Purloined
Letter,” “The Black Cat,” “The Oblong
Box,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The
Gold Bug,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” to
name a few.
The artist wrote: “I attempted to show not just the darkness
that consumed the characters and their worlds but also the intricate
beauty of what they longed for—the love they once had
that was now hopelessly lost.” One look at this delightful
book, and you’ll know she succeeded.
This would be a great gift for friends and relatives or, once
you’ve added your personal artistic touch, a beautiful
and stunning addition to your coffee table.
Notes: Odessa Begay is a popular adult coloring
book artist. Her first adult coloring book release was Little
Birds.
