Are you up for an extreme coloring challenge? Tired of mandalas, florals and the animal kingdom? Here is a book filled with intense drawings of cityscapes bursting with skyscrapers and looking like New York on steroids! This book is a good size, 9¾" (25cm) square and with soft covers but decent quality bright white paper. Pictures are printed on both sides of the page so this is not the opportunity to use paints or permanent markers like Sharpies, but coloring lightly with water based pens does not produce much in the way of bleed. Pictures do disappear into the spine but the book does open out obligingly flat. The paper has a smooth, satiny feel to it that is ideal for pens but lacks the tooth pencil users prefer. I do think that this is going to be a book for fineliners first and foremost, as the drawings are very detailed and you need a good light and plenty of patience. These are hand drawn images not computer scans and not a pixel in sight, just nice black lines. If you are imagining page after page of Manhattan skylines then think again as Mister Mourao shows what you can do with this type of building and divides the book into sections. The first part shows fairly straight views of dizzying skyscrapers, but then he goes on to show how they can bend, tie themselves in knots, explode into fragments and even transform into zeppelins in a steampunk manner. The last section is entitled Imagine and shows buildings in an Escher style, as boats, spirals or in other bizarre shapes. This book is likely to have a broad appeal across the sexes and ages, and any men out there who are complaining that coloring books are too girly might want to take a look at this. Refreshingly different.
