Temperance Brennan is
a forensic anthropologist working in both Montreal, Canada, and Charlotte,
North Carolina. When an outlaw biker war breaks out and the lives of innocent
bystanders are taken, Tempe begins to take it personally. First, a young
girl is caught in the crossfire on a Montreal street. Later, the partial
skeleton of a young girl is found near a biker gravesite, and the remainder
of her body is discovered in North Carolina.
How did this innocent
young girl's bones come to be separated and carried so far apart? As Tempe
works the cases, she also has a houseguest in the form of Kit, her young
nephew from Texas. To make matters worse, Kit had developed a friendship
with a slick television reporter to whom Tempe has taken an instant dislike.
This reporter then introduces Kit to the fringes of the outlaw biker culture
that Tempe is now in the middle of investigating.
As the suspense and
action escalate, Ms. Reichs takes the reader through the sounds and often-gruesome
sights of the world of forensic medicine. There is definitely no sugar
coating in this book. When I first started reading Ms. Reichs' books,
she was often compared to Patricia Cornwell in that their characters and
writing styles are similar. I have since read that some readers, myself
included are now comparing Patricia Cornwell to Kathy Reichs and with
good reason.
