The 5th Horseman
Women's Murder Club series

by James Patterson, Maxine Paetro
Performed by Carolyn McCormick

The Women's Murder Club returns -- Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer, Newspaper Reporter Cindy Thomas and newest member Yuki Castellano, attorney at law. In this episode, Yuki's mother dies under hospital care and Yuki discovers the hospital is already in court, arguing a suspicious death. In her grief, Yuki focuses on finding the truth about her mother's death. Lindsay looks into the hospital deaths, and works a second case she dubs the "Car Girls" murders -- a frightening serial murder case. The lives of the ladies in the Murder Club overlap, causing concerns and disagreements. Lindsay is trying to keep the details of the cases under wraps, but Cindy wants to print what she knows may help Yuki and the other grieving families.

Patterson and Paetro give readers two suspenseful storylines for the price of one. Yuki's mother's death leads her on a journey of grief and suspicion. Listeners get to know Yuki better and witness the testing of the Murder Club bonds. The details of the "Car Girls" murders are fascinating, though graphic and sadistic. It's a powerful, yet tragic read.

Carolyn McCormick narrates Time Warner's audio book version. McCormick works in both television and film. She is best known as Dr. Olivit on Law and Order. Having heard 4th of July read by McCormick, I was looking forward to hearing her read The 5th Horseman. She does a fine job. It's an impressive addition to the series. As usual, Patterson's latest is an absorbing, memorable listen. Remember those headphones!
