Agatha Raisin and The Wizard of Evesham
Agatha Raisin Series #8
by M C Beaton
When Agatha Raisin spots a gray hair, she is desperate to do something about it. Somebody
recommends Mr. John; a hairdresser in nearby Evesham and Agatha finds that he is a wizard
with hair. He is also handsome and keen on getting to know her better, but why? When she
sees two women hurrying away in fear, she starts to suspect that he might also be a
blackmailer, and his untimely demise seems to signal that her suspicions might be true.
It is time to play sleuth again!
Another enjoyable addition to this much-loved satirical series, and once again I marvel
that each book manages to contain many of the same ingredients but still be refreshingly
different. Ms. Beaton has some hilarious things to say to Evesham, about the perennial
perils of eating out, going to the hairdressers and village life. James is absent, so
enter Sir Charles Fraith as another suitor who views Agatha as a pleasant time-filler in
between managing his estate and looking for somebody more his age to marry. As ever, there
is also an engaging whodunit to enjoy which I did guess this time (not as tortuous as
some of the others) and the usual admirably pithy pacing, although I found no actual
surprises this time. This isn't one of the strongest entries in the series, but with a
series this good, all the entries are strong. Highly recommended. |
