The Case of the Roasted Onion
The Casebook of Dr. McKenzie #1
by Claudia Bishop
Vet Austin McKenzie has his hands full although he is supposed to be retired, running his farm. But good vets are
hard to come by, and when one of them is murdered, he is invited to replace him at a three-day event. High society
equestrian events are not his bag, but when another vet is murdered and he acquires two student assistants (one with
a secret) it is time to turn sleuth. But with the body count increasing, even being made deputy to the local chief
of detectives might not be enough...
This is book one in a new series by the author of the popular Hemlock Falls series (thirteen books and counting).
Set in the same location, and with frequent mentions of this hostelry, its existing fans will be pleased to see this
spin-off series. Told in the first person by Austin, this is a swift gallop through the interconnecting worlds of
both high society horse events and veterinary practice. Both are fascinating and make for interesting reading,
although the story seems to build to a crescendo and then falls rather flat, with an abrupt end and questions
unanswered. If you like the author’s other books and cozy crime in general, this series is sure to be worth
sticking with however, and there is quite a lot to enjoy in here as well as some interesting characters. |
