Dolled Up For Murder
A Gretchen Birch Dolls to Die For Mystery

by Deb Baker

Gretchen Birch is summoned by her aunt to Phoenix, Arizona when her mother, Caroline, disappeares after having been seen at the scene of the death of Martha Williams, a destitute doll collector. A note is found in the dead woman's hand implicating Caroline, who is also a doll collector. Gretchen puts aside her own problems - recent loss of employment and infidelity of her boy friend of 7 years - to locate her mother and prove her innocence. She becomes involved with members of the Phoenix doll collectors organization who jealously guard their possessions and sources. She is assisted by her Aunt Nina, who is also occupied in establishing a business training dogs to travel in purses. Together they are trying to trace a rare French doll.

Meanwhile Caroline is trying to keep one step ahead of the owner of that rare French doll, hoping to trap him and unmask him as the killer.

In addition to a glimpse into the world of doll collecting, we are treated to studies on how dolls are restored; how they are preserved. There is a comprehensive litany of the world of dolls. Did anyone realize there are this many and so valuable? The stand off between Gretchen's three legged cat and Nina's "purse dogs" is amusing. I feel a little information about and action with the "purse dogs" would be more than enough. The atmosphere and the landscape of Phoenix is successfully depicted. You can almost feel the temperature soaring.

This is an entertaining and informative story with a cast of interesting characters, suitable for a few hours of relaxation.
