For Better or Hearse
An Annabelle Archer Mystery #2
by Laura Durham
Better off Wed (also reviewed on this site) introduced wedding planner and sometime
sleuth Annabelle Archer and here she is back for a second case. You might think that she
is used to temperamental chefs but everybody seems to hate Henri, and this is surely why
he is found impaled on an ice sculpture at one of her weddings. Fingers point at Annabelle's
friend Georgia the hotel manager, and soon she is in jail and in danger of losing her
job. Annabelle summons her friends Kate, Richard and Leatrice and off they go to play
detective, but it looks as though they are up against a very determined killer.
I enjoyed the first of this highly amusing cozy modern crime series and was pleased
to find that the second was every bit as good. No worries about the background being
poorly researched when the author is a real-life wedding planner, and again I found myself
wishing there could be more of this side of things. Not that the crime story isn't exciting,
pacy and enjoyable, because it is and I didn't guess it, but the society weddings are so
hilarious and over-the-top. Having the protagonist tell the story is not always a good
idea, but Annabelle keeps to the point and manages to stay away from repetition, getting
maudlin or being too ditzy (three of the main problems with telling a story in the first
person in too many books). Leatrice is a hoot, and the outrageously campy Richard,
hairdresser-dressed-as-a-priest Fern and the "Mighty Morphin Flower Arrangers" all contribute
to make this a laugh-out-loud tale. More please, and soon. |
