Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii
Adrian Monk Series #1
by Lee Goldberg
Adrian Monk, a phenomenal detective, never lets his guard down. With so much spinning through his head, Monk definitely
needs an assistant. Monk’s crime solving gift is hindered by his obsessions and phobias. Natalie Teeger fills the
role as assistant and caregiver. When Natalie asks for an overdue vacation, Monk reluctantly agrees. After all, she
may deserve to attend her best friend’s wedding, but who will take care of Monk? Natalie hires a temporary caregiver,
arranges Monk’s psychiatrist appointments, and jets off to her Hawaiian get-away.
All seems in order until Natalie hears a somewhat familiar voice during the in-flight breakfast. Natalie looks
in amazement at a casual and worry-free Monk on the plane headed for Hawaii. Planes, strangers, and casual do not
typically describe Monk. Swallowing a doctor-prescribed pill, Monk transforms to a pseudo-cool guy with no inhibitions.
Landing in Hawaii, Natalie prays that Monk will not ruin her friend’s wedding or her sun-filled activities.
When the pill’s effects wear off, Monk latches onto life’s imperfections including the groom and the hotel room towels.
The curious Monk then intrudes upon a Hawaiian police crime scene. A hotel guest is found dead in a bungalow hot tub.
Lt. Ben Kealoha declares the death accidental; the woman drowned after being knocked unconscious by a wayward coconut.
Monk declares that the woman was murdered, and Natalie realizes that the Hawaiian sun will not stop Monk’s investigation.
Monk sidesteps his way through a chain of suspects. Premiere guest and psychic Dylan Swift offers messages that could
lead Monk to the killer. Can Monk solve the murder in the midst of an abundance of geckos, raw nature, and a hotel
of rolled towels?
Author and television scriptwriter Lee Goldberg tells an intriguing mystery with fun, quirky characters. Fans of
the Monk television series will recognize scenarios from past episodes and will enjoy extended time with the
Monk characters. Natalie’s point of view provides an unexpected and delightful twist. Goldberg nails Monk’s
intriguing and complex character. Natalie and Monk’s interactions are laugh-out-loud funny. Find
