Rise to Victory
by R Cameron Cooke
The attack submarine USS Providence is returning from its six-month deployment in
the Middle East. The crew is looking forward to returning home. Instead, they receive
orders to proceed immediately to Indonesia to evacuate an American citizen, a doctor endangered
by an imminent insurrection. When they reach the Molucca Islands, Providence's
captain, David Edwards, finds there is more to the mission than just rescuing the doctor,
who isn't the innocent medical man they had thought. They are confronted with offshore
pirates, a new rebel submarine with qualities superior to those of the Providence,
deadly native opponents and a wily submarine captain, out to conquer the world. It takes
a deadly underwater battle between the two submarines before the Providence can
complete its mission and return home safely.
This is a naval thriller which will hold your interest from the moment you pick it up.
The author concentrates on the story and the individuals instead of the technical aspects,
though the details of the submarine are very realistic. The story is written from the
perspective of the submariners with a cast of very believable people with faults revealed
and in some cases, overcome. The life on board the submarine is depicted in detail.
The atmosphere of the island and the hazardous trip Lake and his team must undertake to
rescue the doctor is very graphic. The battle scenes between the two submarines are excellent
and very stirring.
This is one of the best naval thrillers I have read in quite a while. It is very reminiscent
of the books by Douglas Reeman and Edward Beach, two of the most outstanding naval fiction
writers. This author will join their rank. Put this on your list of "to-be-read". |
