The Tooth of Time
Maxie and Stretch series #2
by Sue Henry
Maxie McNabb and her trusty dachshund Stretch are back for a second case after their exploits in The Serpents
Trail (also reviewed on this site). A widow in her sixties, she is determined to make the most of her "third
age" and frequently leaves her home in Alaska to have adventures in her Minnie Winnie. This time she is in New
Mexico, keen to learn about weaving and buy some new yarn in her favorite store - but no sooner has she entered
than she hears about the attempted suicide of another customer. Jilted by her husband for a younger woman, she
has been conned by a man who she thought loved her. Shirley has tried to end it all in her car with carbon
monoxide, but oddly she has no recollection of having done so, and her last memory is of being in her bed. It is
up to Maxie to try and find out what really happened.
Maxie makes a great narrator; sensible, fun-loving and meeting life head-on, her words make it into a real
page-turner. It isn’t as plot ridden as the first book, but I didn’t guess it all and the whole novel is a
pleasing mixture of New Mexico, weaving, spot-on narrative and mystery. There is plenty of humor in here too,
and while young-at-heart Maxie makes a great protagonist for older readers, this is a book that will have much
wider appeal. I was left wanting more, which is always a good sign, and I look forward to her next case. |
