The Chick and the Dead
A Pepper Martin Mystery #2
by Casey Daniels
When cemetery tour guide Pepper Martin hit her head on a headstone, she found that she could see dead people. Her
first case was Mafia don Gus Scarpetti (see Don of the Dead, also
reviewed on this site), but now she has another client in the incorporeal shape of Didi Bowman. Didi died in
1959, but now wants Pepper to prove that it was she and not her sister, Merilee, who wrote bestselling novel, "So
Far The Dawn." As this book has made Merilee an icon with fan clubs everywhere, it is not going to be easy, even
if Ms Bowman is coming to Ohio City...
I love a good woo woo book, but only if it is a good one, and this must surely be one of the most
difficult types of fiction to write well. But this series works a treat, being original, funny and sharp, with
plenty of plot and some interesting surprises. There is a separate story in each book, but do read them in order;
there are some long-running plot strands that are shaping up nicely in this second entry. Pepper makes a bubbly
but very human narrator, and her take on life (sassy rather than ditzy) keeps those pages turning. All these
elements make for a good series book, and this is shaping up to be one of those. |
