Cries and Whiskers
Theda Krakow series, No. 3
by Clea Simon
Another great outing for Theda Krakow, and her creator Clea Simon. You don't have to be a cat lover or a music
lover to enjoy this book, but it is a nice bonus for those who enjoy either. Cats and music are the concurrent
themes of this clever, although somewhat convoluted, mystery. Theda is a free-lance writer, specializing in the
music scene of Cambridge, MA, and its environs. She prowls the club scene listening to up-and-coming bands and
stumbles on a bizarre new designer drug which seems to be circulating. Her tale begins when she inadvertently
gets caught up in the undercurrents revolving around an animal rights activist's death and a rescue mission for
feral cats. Theda's own love of cats, especially her pet Musetta, keeps her off balance, while she struggles to
keep the quickly unraveling strands of her story intact. The present writing gig is about a new band that seems
to have instantly appeared without "paying their dues" through the route of the clubs. This sends Theda behind
the scenes to search for answers.
Clea Simon is quite deft at weaving her tale - lots of side streams to confuse and mislead; a bit of romance
with Theda's long-time lover, injured police officer Bill; and strange goings-on with her large group of friends.
Ms. Simon is obviously a serious cat lover and her character's relationship with her cat seems much like that of a
parent and child.
There is interesting information subtly woven into the story as well, the case for the care and neutering of
feral cats, and lots of fascinating tidbits about jazz, rock and roll, and the club-band scene. The dénouement
is ingenious and somewhat unexpected, so that the reader has a definite "ah-ha" moment. Although care needs to
be taken while reading so you don't get sidetracked with the red herrings, it is a delightful read, with
delightful and well-sketched characters. Its December release makes it the perfect read for a cold winter's
night. |
