Julia Ransom is suspected of the brutal murder of her renowned psychic husband, Dr August Ransom. Because of
the lack of evidence, after 6 months she is finally free of their questioning. To enjoy her freedom she takes a
solitary walk along San Francisco's Pier 39. There she engages in a casual conversation with a man who viciously
attacks her. When a shout from a passerby stops him from completing his mission he throws her into the Bay. She
is rescued by the passerby, Special Agent Cheney Stone. In trying to make sense of the attack, Stone suspects a
link between the attack and the murder of her husband.
Meanwhile, in Maestro, Virginia, Sheriff Dixon Noble is finally coming to terms with the unexplained, unsolved
disappearance of his wife Christie three years ago. He is learning to live again with the love of Ruth Warnecki,
an FBI special agent. His life is disrupted when Christie's godfather, Jules Advere, arrives from San Francisco.
He informs Christie's father, Chappy Holmcombe, that he has seen Christie at a fund raiser sponsored by Thomas
Pallack. Pallack's wife, Charlotte, is the mirror image of Christie. When Dixon hears of this he immediately
departs for San Francisco. He must ascertain whether this is Christie or just someone bearing a startling
resemblance to his missing wife. He has been convinced, over the years, that Christie is dead. In his search for
the mystery behind Charlotte's identity his path crosses with Cheney's search for the truth behind Ransom's
murder. The two cases seem to be linked together, and before long both FBI agents, Dillon Savich and Lacey
Sherlock, are drawn into the investigation.
Coulter has given her readers another fast paced story full of twists and turns. The well drawn characters
are colorful and likeable. The action is constant with a wild car chase through the streets of San Francisco
which will leave the reader breathless. The reader is given a fascinating look into the world of psychics.
Highly recommended for an evening's reading, but you won't turn off
the lights until you have reached the last page...
