Port Silva series #9
by Janet LaPierre
Those mother and daughter sleuths, Patience and Verity MacKellar, are back for a ninth outing about Port Silva, a
coastal town in northern California. This time there is an incident at an anti-war rally and several of the
protestors tumble off a cliff - but did they fall, or were they pushed by the police as it is being said? One of
these was a man called Daniel Soto whom Verity had hired to remodel her house, and his girlfriend hires the
MacKellars to discover what really happened. Of course, also along for the ride are Verity’s boyfriend and Sylvie,
the little girl Verity is going to adopt.
This is an engaging and topical cozy, although don’t do what I did and jump right in with book nine. So much
seems to have happened that in order to enjoy, and make sense of, this tangled tale, you really need to start at
the beginning. There is a lot of story packed into this slim volume, and I fully intend to read my way through
all the others to see what I have been missing. It is a set of books that have won awards, and no wonder, for as
well as engaging characters and a proper detective story plot there is all the background of the war with Iraq,
issues about bringing up children, and the nature of democracy. All in under 300 pages (phew!) |
