A Thriller About Love and Other Addictions
by Matt Richtel
Read
by Jason Singer
Being
an investigative journalist comes in handy for Nat after a woman
drops a note on his table at a local San Francisco café --
a note which saves his life and rocks his world. Nat walked away
from a career as a doctor to follow his bliss. After finding love,
Nat lost Annie in a drowning accident. He’s spent the last
four years getting his professional and personal life back in perspective.
It's all shattered when he realizes the note dropped on his table
is written in Annie’s handwriting.
After a bomb
goes off in the café, the police arrive and take names. They
question everyone and look for a woman seen getting into a red Saab,
so does Nat. He knows if he finds the woman, he’ll find the
author of the note. In the meantime, Nat has a friend work on his
laptop. The friend notices high-tech software on the laptop Nat
wasn’t aware of. Once Nat gets the author of the software,
his own investigation begins. Working to find the woman in the café
and the author of the software, leads Nat into danger – He’ll
never look at a laptop or react to a needle the same. As people
play with his mind and his health, Nat loses trust in everyone.
When
Hooked came out, I surfed over to the Hachette website
and listened to an excerpt that reeled me in. It’s a mystery
on the move -- action and suspense involving local terrorism and
technology. Nat is a likable character in so much danger he gets
the hang of running for his life pretty quick. The storyline offers
plenty of red herrings and keeps up the pace until the listener
gets an idea of what’s really going on, and by then you just
wonder if poor Nat will survive. It’s an additive storyline
that will keep you listening until the last CD is played. Hachette’s
audio version is read by Jason Singer. His reading is spot on and
he makes Nat even more likable. Hooked is an unexpected
surprise. Do your friends a favor and tell them about one of Hachette’s
best audio mysteries out today – Hooked.
