Hostile Environment

by Patrick J. Crowell

Mr. Crowell has written a book about an almost untouchable subject, sexual harassment in the workplace, set in a legal arena with female(s) in power, specifically the Attorney for the firm charged with the sexual harassment. It is a well-written book which exposes the glass ceiling that slows a woman’s progress in the job markets, and touches on the ways harassment, in any form, withers the victims.

Western Town Theme Parks is a huge mega company that boasts of equality in the workplace, but inside the boardroom, there aren’t any women in important positions. Lou Scarlechek is the Head of Legal and very power hungry. DeeDee Lane is a young, impressionable Legal Secretary, who is coming up the ladder the hard way. Adel Blair is an Attorney, who has made a name for herself in Competitive Rowing and is a champion on a men's rowing team. She is also the strongest arm of a law firm that specializes in Equal Rights and Harassment Issues, specifically, the EEOC Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act that prohibits discrimination in any field on any level. There is the murder/death by accident of a Prostitute in Colorado while Tom Peckinpah, CEO of Western Town, is in charge of the Annual Company Honchos Meeting at a Ski Lodge. It is a topsy turvey story of deceit, power grabbing, and blackmail leading to total mental breakdowns and suicide, with DeeDee Lane hauled into the middle of the melee by Scarlechek and his thirst for acceptance and honor among the bigger players. Hostile Environment is startlingly true in many places and work areas, even today in the US. It is hard to fathom that those ideas still exist so long after the EEOC rulings back in the mid-sixties and all the strides that females in the workplace have made. However, there are places and jobs that still have the stigmas attached, which make it impossible for a female to get ahead unless she plays the game. Scarlechek is a genuine swine in almost every conceivable way, and yet, I have known bosses just like him. And I thought that the battles we fought so hard to win back in the 60’s were almost gone out of today’s world, but in reality, they are still alive and well, just hiding beneath the surface. You will enjoy this book, if you like the bad guy to get what is coming to him.
