Hurricane
Punch
Serge Storms Mystery, No 9
by Tim Dorsey
There is no subject or person safe from the biting humor of New York Times bestselling author Tim Dorsey. His
comic novels are more social satire than anything else, and he does an excellent job of sticking the needle to
just about everyone. In Hurricane Punch, Dorsey brings back his ultra unique protagonist, Serge Storms,
for another wild ride around Florida as hurricanes are about to batter the state. The plot - which in a Dorsey
book is always loosely defined - centers around Serge’s usual trail of dead bodies getting confused with the work
of a serial killer. Serge only takes out those who deserve it - like the gentleman in the car next to him who has his
music turned up a tad too loud - and he is miffed that anyone might confuse him with an actual serial killer.
Caught in the middle and on Serge’s trail as always is Agent Mahoney, the poor soul who ended up in a mental
hospital after his last tangle with Serge. Look out, Florida.
Dorsey is a former journalist and his ability to find unique angles through which to skewer popular culture
reflects that. In fact, he saves some of his best jabs for the media and they work particularly well because he
clearly knows the inner workings. But there are few cultural conventions that Dorsey doesn’t poke fun at. These
books aren’t necessarily about Serge and his adventures - they are more about how silly society is and how
everyone would be better off if they took themselves a whole lot less seriously. Dorsey manages to convey all
that in an engaging and humorous way.
Dorsey’s books are an acquired taste, but this one could serve off
as a good starting point for those unfamiliar with his work. As
long as you’re looking for something less than traditional and something
that will make you laugh out loud and entertain you, Hurricane
Punch will satisfy you.
