NYPSD Lt. Eve Dallas investigates the murder of Craig Foster, whose body was discovered by two 10-year-old girls.
Craig was a much admired history teacher at Sarah Child Academy - one who had no apparent enemies. As Eve, along
with her partner Detective Delia Peabody, question staff, parents, and Craig’s family in an attempt to uncover
the murderer, they soon dismiss Craig’s wife as a suspect. Eve soon realizes that discovering the identity of the
murderer will not be an easy task. Craig was a man with well-established habits, making it easy for a parent or
teacher to slip the deadly ricin into Craig’s cocoa.
Then Magdelana Percell, an old flame of Eve’s husband, Rourke, arrives in town, obviously wanting to rekindle
her past relationship with Rourke.
When Eve learns that Craig Foster was aware that one of the teachers, Reed Williams, had sex with one of the
parents, Reed becomes her prime suspect in Foster’s death. The discovery of Reed’s promiscuity turns Eve’s
thoughts to Rourke. Even her partner, Peabody, is aware that Eve’s full attention is not their case, and assures
Eve that her husband would not cheat on her. Eve’s self-doubts are understandable, for Magdelana is as
manipulative and calculating as she is beautiful and sexy.
But Eve’s trust in Rourke falters when she sees him on TV holding Magdelana... and then the main suspect in
her case dies...
Nora Robert’s latest release in her futuristic "In Death" series, writing as J.D. Robb, held me
spellbound from the first page to the last. The characters were divinely developed and the tension throughout
kept me in suspense on more than one level. Eve’s character is brilliantly developed. Rourke is sinfully charming.
Magdelana is delightfully selfish, and Rourke’s faithful majordomo, Sommerset, adds a wonderful touch of humor to
this outstanding novel.
Innocent in Death is a gripping, thoroughly entertaining mystery, guaranteed to keep readers on the
edge of their seats until the surprising end... and leave them wanting more.
