Night Work
by Steve Hamilton
Joe Trumbull, a juvenile probation officer in Kingston, NY, has finally decided to socialize again. Two years ago
his fiance was killed in a brutal murder, which is still unsolved. Until now he’s been unable to forget or start
living again. His friends set up a blind date for him, which he approaches with anxious doubt, but the date turns
out well. She is beautiful, charming and so agreeable that Joe ends up spending the night with her. Shortly
thereafter she is discovered murdered -strangled with one of Joe's neckties. The local police chief calls in
state detectives who immediately make Joe their prime suspect. Then two more women who recently had contact with
Joe are murdered. One is strangled with one of Joe's shoelaces. Someone is killing any woman who has contact with
him and is framing him. Joe must investigate to clear his name.
This is a stand-alone, a departure from Hamilton's Alex McKnight series. As in his previous novels, he evokes
the life and atmosphere of the town, in this instance Kingston, NY, and the Hudson River landscape. His
characters are well developed -especially Joe Trumbull, a sympathetic character, with his devotion to his job
as probation officer and his struggle to forget the past. The plot is well-developed with much suspense and
tension that builds toward an unexpected and terrifying climax. |
