Pegasus Descending
Dave Robicheaux series #14
by James Lee Burke
Twenty-five years ago, the young Dave Robicheaux was an alcohol-soaked cop who witnessed his friend and fellow
Vietnam vet, Dallas Klein's, execution by a group of cold-blooded robbers. He was unable to intercede because he
was plastered. Since then, still guilt-ridden, Dave has made redemption a lifelong pursuit. Now in New Iberia,
Louisiana, a gorgeous young woman shows up who may be Dallas Klein's daughter. Trish Klein is passing counterfeit
money and baiting Whitey Bruxal, the aging mobster who may have been responsible for Dallas's death.
Meanwhile, Dave investigates the apparent suicide of pretty young co-ed Yvonne Darbonne. Dave thinks the two
cases are linked. He enlists longtime sidekick, Clete Purcel, to help prove it. But then, when Clete falls in
love with the scheming Trish, Robicheaux's problems escalate, and he doesn't seem to be getting any closer to
solving either death.
Burke's descriptions are stellar...no one does it better. Reading his prose is pure pleasure. His flawed hero
is one we can all identify with and love in spite of his shortcomings, and the other complex characters defy
simple labels. Cons, scams, racial prejudice, gambling debts, drugs, and death head up the fast paced, exciting
plot in this fourteenth Robicheaux psychological suspense novel.
If you aren't familiar with James Lee Burke's novels, here is a good place to start...but you just might find
yourself addicted like I have. There are still some of his out-of-print books that I'm trying to find. |
