Play Dead
by David Rosenfelt
Andy Carpenter is a dog lover, especially golden retrievers. He’s also a lawyer. Imagine his surprise when he checks
in on the shelter that he works with and finds a healthy and beautiful golden, Reggie, who allegedly bit his owner.
Andy makes quick work in making sure that Reggie is free from pending death. However, Reggie is the key to a much
bigger case, a murder case that involves his owner, who’s been in jail for the last five years. Will Andy be able
to use Reggie in reopening his owner’s case? And even better, reunite owner and dog?
Andy Carpenter is a sarcastic and competent lawyer whose characterization is fantastic. The sarcasm is subtle
and funny, which adds to the enjoyment of Play Dead. Andy’s characterization makes sense in context with his
friends and in the courtroom. The mystery is complex and, over time, a little piece of the mystery is added,
adding to the complexity. The mystery is not solved until the very end.
What is very enjoyable is the combination of the trial scenes and the behind-the-scenes action that Andy and his
defensive team accomplish. It is a great mixture of scenes and action. |
