Spyware

by R J Pineiro

Mac Savage, former CIA officer, has a security consulting firm catering to the diamond industry in Antwerp, Belgium. As he is consulting with a top member of a diamond firm, the man is assassinated. Savage was also to be targeted but escapes and is forced to go on the run from the terminators.

He forms an alliance with Maria Kovics, a former diamond nanotechnology scientist, who is in Sierra Leone and witnesses the brutality of the "blood diamond" mining. Lt. Kate Chavez, a Texas Ranger, finds a ring of corruption in Texas with powerful connections throughout the world.

There is a huge global business empire called The Donavan Group, which was created by Anne Donovan, a Berkeley activist. Its primary subsidiary is a company named Gemtech, which has created an artificial intelligence cell called ANN, using diamond nanotechnology. The group members's brains are interfaced with a super-intelligent AI through which they become a super-extension of ANN. They are completely controlled by ANN. The membership includes public officials and business leaders from all over the world. Even the Vice President of the US has been implanted. Donavan's goal is to save the planet Earth by eliminating the human race.

Savage and Kovics join Chavez in a dangerous mission to stop the group.

This is a fascinating look into the world of nanotechnology. It is a terrifying example of what can develop in the hands and minds of misguided people. The characters are well developed. The well executed plot is action packed, full of twists ad turns. This is a real page turner.

My only reservation is that for the layperson there is too much detail given about the field of nanotechnology. I didn't need that much information to enjoy and appreciate the story.
