Tanner's Tiger
An Evan Tanner novel #8
by Lawrence Block
Evan Tanner, Korean War veteran, secret agent who works for an unnamed agency is a do gooder, 75% Boy Scout,
25% James Bond, interested in hopeless causes. A head injury from shrapnel has destroyed the sleep center
in his brain. So he never sleeps. He is conscious and energetically productive 24 hours a day (according to
his creator, Lawrence Block). Tanner's boss sends him notes scribbled on gumwrappers.
Tanner is sent to Montreal Exposition to investigate the Cuban Pavilion. Rumor has it that the Cubans are up
to violent political action. He is stopped by the Canadian Mounties, suspected of being a terrorist. He must
penetrate the scene in disguise. Then his adopted daughter, Mina, is kidnapped. To elude the Mounties,
investigate the Cuban situation and find Mina's kidnapper he turns for help to Beautiful Quebec nationist,
Arletta, whose greatest ambition is to blow up the Queen of England.
As usual Block has given us a well plotted adventure filed with humor and high spirits. First published in
1968 the story reflects the antiwar protests and the violent political activism of the time. |
