A Death in Texas
the second annual Final Twist mystery anthology
by The Final Twist
(Houston Texas Writers Group)
The subtitle to A Death in Texas, A Final Twist Anthology, gives a clue to the nature of the stories. All of
the stories have that O. Henry-like surprise ending, or, at least, that is the effect the authors were seeking.
This works for the first two or three stories and then the reader knows to expect something unusual in the end.
However, this does not detract from the quality of the work. It simply means that, as the reader reads more and
more stories in a row, the surprise ending looses some of its punch.
The first story "Pushing up Bluebonnets" sets up suspense that has the reader hooked, but the author could have
held the reader a little longer. The problem was solved rather quickly after the author has gained the reader’s
interest. The author could have taken the reader on a much longer route to a solution. Having said this, the story
was one of my favorites in the anthology.
One of the better stories is the last one in the anthology, "Anna Rose." The story has a grandmotherly character
named Louise. Is it possible that this lovable character could be guilty of some offense and part of the "twist" at
the end of the story?
All stories are by a Texas-based writers group called The Final Twist, and all stories are set in cities and towns
in Texas. Information is given about each of the authors, either at the beginning of his / her story, or at the
end. |
