The Amnesiac

by Sam Taylor

While running up the stairs to answer a ringing telephone in his Amsterdam apartment, James Purlew trips and breaks an ankle bone. Being in a cast restricts his activities and gives him too much time to think. He has brief illusions of faces and sounds from the past three years that he cannot recall. When his relationship with his live-in lover, Ingrid, dissolves he suddenly decides to return to England and the town of H in hopes of finding those three lost years.

He takes with him a locked black box, which he believes contains diaries of the three lost years. But the key is also lost. In England he becomes obsessed with a deserted house in which a tragic suicide occurred. He finds part of an old 19h century manuscript in the house where he lives then discovers clues in that manuscript which seem to be linked to his missing years.

The Amnesiac is an engrossing and complex story told by the Amnesiac and an undisclosed observer of his actions. It is beautifully written with much introspection on the part of the protagonist. It is a combination of a mystery and a journey into the past, with hidden clues along the way.
