The Anteater of Death
A Gunn Zoo Mystery

by Betty Webb

Teddy Bentley has been a zookeeper for the past year at the Gunn Landing Zoo. Teddy loves animals and loves working with them at the zoo even if the new zoo director, Barry Fields, has all the self-confidence of the truly ignorant. One morning as Teddy goes to care for the anteater, Lucy, she finds a man in a soiled tuxedo half-hidden by the weeds and totally dead. At first everyone assumes the anteater is the cause of this poor man, named Grayson's, demise until it's discovered during the autopsy that he died from a gunshot wound and the wounds inflicted by Lucy all occurred post-mortem. But Lucy is still being constrained until the board passes down their decision from on high as to her future fate.

When Zorah Vega, head zookeeper, is arrested for Grayson's murder Teddy is positive they've got the wrong person. In order to clear Zorah, Teddy must find the real killer. Teddy's father shows up for a visit; he lives his life on the run due to his illegal scamming practices. Teddy is busy with her past and present love, Joe Rejas, who just happens to now be the sheriff. Busy with the zoo, a father on the run, an overbearing mother, the murder investigation, a second murder and her money woes Teddy is banged over the head and shot at...but then—as they say at the zoo—let nature take its course.

The Anteater of Death is an entertaining mystery with a delightful cast of characters. I enjoyed spending time at the zoo with Teddy and hearing about zookeeping and the different animals, learning more about their care and how they interact with others. If you're an animal lover like me you will truly enjoy reading this book or if you're a fan of mystery you will enjoy it as well. With its interesting and tightly woven plot it will keep you guessing to the bitter end.
