Assassins At Ospreys
Country House Crime, book 3
by R T Raichev
Whodunit writer Antonia Darcy meets two eccentric women at a book signing, and her husband promptly dubs them
Goldilocks and Cerberus. Beatrice "Bee" Ardleigh is pretty, spoiled and in a wheelchair following a car accident
thirty years earlier, and devoted companion Ingrid Delmar looks after her. But a few months later Antonia is
telephoned by Bee, who ends up going with her husband, Major Payne, to visit Antonia. Now the ménage is rather
different, and why has the terminally ill owner of crumbling stately home, Ospreys, decided to leave his entire
vast fortune to Bee?
This is the third in this series of country house murder mysteries, and it remains as inventive as the other
two. Here is the classic era murder mystery updated for a modern - and rather more cynical - era with a cast of
grotesques and a somewhat surreal atmosphere.
Characters include the ghastly, gushing Bee, with her blonde hair and mink coat; black-gloved Ingrid; the
ne’er-do-well nephew of the dying man; and a male nurse with green nail polish. Unfortunately, this also means
the author has created a story with two greedy people, impossible to like, vying for an inheritance, backed up by
a supporting cast of equally unlovable people. At times this rather sours the story, but the plot pulls the
reader on and this writer can certainly pace a book. I didn’t guess it all but I did have a lot of fun trying,
and so will you. |
