Atomic
Lobster
Serge Storms Mystery, No 10
by Tim Dorsey
Serge A. Storms and his perpetually drunk and stoned side kick, Coleman, are back, and they decide to take a Florida
road trip along with the sexy babe, Rachel. Serial killer Tex McGraw, sprung from prison with revenge on his mind,
assorted Mexican and American drug dealers, a group of investing grannies who like to cruise, an ex-football player,
and various other characters have also begun their own trips, and are destined to meet up with our heroes. Lobster
Lane is the home of some of the characters, and much of the fevered activity takes place there.
This fast-moving, raucous tale delivers Dorsey's usual punch and slapstick action in page after page as
harebrained ideas are hatched and brought to fruition...and is the government really trying to cover up a plot
against national security? The Grannies have figured out a way to live on cruise ships on the cheap, and are having
a great time monopolizing the available dance partners. The murdering McGraws are having a family reunion, and Serge
and Coleman are just trying to keep ahead of everyone. Murder is not out of the question, nor is any other crime, and
the pages are awash with booze and drugs.
Dorsey's brand of comedy isn't for everyone, and I have to be in the
right mood to enjoy his approach to suspense. Each chapter updates
the action from a different character's viewpoint, with timelines
that are not always chronological. But Atomic Lobster is
pure entertainment, laced with lots of historical trivia, and it
kept me reading right through to the end.
