Let me say it simply: Michelle Gagnon can write!
In Boneyard, the second book in a series featuring FBI Agent Kelly Jones, Gagnon has crafted an intricate
thriller about a serial killer and a wannabe copycat slayer. Agent Jones is called in because human bones have been
found scattered along the northern end of the Appalachian Trail. Some of the bones could be a decade or more old, and
the remains found are from at least five bodies. In addition, Jones faces a turf war among local law enforcement
agencies because the bones were found in both Massachusetts and Vermont. Not only is there resentment toward Jones
and the FBI, but there is local antagonism between police officials. As the investigation continues, more bodies are
found - now in New York.
Gagnon skillfully leads the reader through the investigation, including stonewalling by local law enforcement,
conflicting lab reports, DNA leads, legwork at a local gay bar, and much more. These procedures are accurate and
believable and make for fascinating reading. But it is Gagnon's decision to show the reader glimpses of both the
killer and a copycat, revealing reasons why both are doing what they do which takes it to the next level. Suggestions
about their identities are made through Gagnon's carefully dropping tiny clues in description, action, or emotional
states.
Boneyard is an edge-of-your-seat page turner which carries the reader through a complex tale that weaves
together many different storylines to a heart-stopping, but very satisfying ending. Gagnon is a brilliant new talent.
And, I hope that she continues to produce many of these Agent Jones thrillers for a long time to come! Brava!
