The Book of Lies

by Brad Metzer
Read by Scott Brick

Despite the inordinate number of convenient coincidences, Brad Meltzer’s book The Book of Lies captures the reader’s (listener’s) attention.  The book links the death of Abel by his brother Cain to the 1932 homicide of the father of Jerry Siegel, the creator of Superman.  Calvin Harper, the main character, also rescues his own father many years after Calvin witnessed his father killing his mother.  Tying all this together gets complicated but Meltzer hooks us with this idea that there is a book that will explain the mystery of the weapon that Cain used to kill Abel and we listen on.

The action is suspenseful enough but with such a huge number of half-developed characters, it is hard to keep them straight and exactly what their role in The Book of Lies is.  The idea of the mysterious book keeps the plot moving.  If not for that, many listeners might ditch the book.

Scott Brick's reading is superb and his suspenseful tone is one of the reasons that the listener hangs in there to see what will happen next.  With such a large number of characters, this is no easy task but Brick pulls it off and the reader knows who is who throughout the novel.

The listener will have to decide for himself if all the complications are resolved in a satisfactory manner, including the explanation of the locale and content of The Book of Lies.
