Buried Lies

by Peter Rennebohm

Gus Ivy, on a fishing vacation with friends on Lake Havasau, Arizona, takes time out for a haircut at Frankie's Barber Shop.  There, he sees a box of books which contains a copy of The Cavity Lake Gang written by one of his favorite Western authors.  He is a collector of first editions.  Frankie tells him that he has had several inquiries lately about the book.  He then goes on to tell Gus the story of the book, which was a gift sent to him and the soldiers of his squadron from a wealthy man whose son was killed with them.  The man's wealth is hidden to avoid allowing the government to take its share.  The secret to finding the wealth is hidden in the book.   Gus must have the book and gives Frankie $50 for it.

On inspection, Gus finds the book has no copyright, isn't listed in any bibliography and its style isn't consistent with the author's previous books.  When Gus goes to Frankie's shop the next day he finds Frank murdered.   A young deaf woman arrives on the scene, claiming to be the granddaughter of this obscure author.  The book is a cryptic map leading to an unexpected treasure.  Together with Sam, his dog, they begin a search for the killer, who is determined to obtain the book. Gus is attacked in his hotel room.  The assailant kills Gus's friend Manny. Gus's sister is kidnapped by the murderer who wants the book.  He will trade the sister for the book.

Following the clues in the book, they cover half the continent from Frankie's barber shop to casinos in Las Vegas, to the house of a Navajo elder in the Navajo Indian Nation in northwest Arizona.

Buried Lies is filled with danger and excitement.  The treasure hunt instigated by the book is an intriguing and fascinating one.  The episode with the Navajo elder is a mind boggling one.  The descriptions of the countries traveled are vivid.  The characters are human and colorful.  This is a page turner guaranteed to hold the reader's attention until the last page.
