Case Histories
Jackson Brodie Book #1

by Kate Atkinson
Read by Susan Jameson

Case Histories is the story of Private Investigator Jackson Brodie, who takes on three cold cases. The first one deals with the disappearance of four year old Olivia Land. The child was sleeping in a tent in her back yard. Only her sister, Amelia, was allowed to be out there with her. During the night, the child vanished and was never found. Now thirty four years later, Jackson Brodie sets out to find her. He fears that he’ll find remains instead of finding a healthy young woman, as he would prefer. But he has information that police didn’t have when Olivia disappeared.  Brodie intends to question Olivia’s father as a suspect. Before he can do so, however, Victor Land dies.

The second case history is about the murder of a beautiful young woman named Laura, the daughter of an attorney.  Her father had talked her into taking a job in his office. He felt she would be safe if she worked where he could keep an eye on her. One morning, a man burst into the conference room where Laura kept her office and started stabbing people. Many were injured but only Laura died. Ten years later, her father, a morbidly obese man, goes to Jackson Brodie to help him find out who killed his daughter and why. Jackson wonders why the other daughter, Jennifer, didn’t come home for her sister’s funeral. If Laura was her father’s favorite, did Jennifer’s jealousy play a role in Laura’s death?

The third case involves Michelle, a nineteen year old woman who longs for an escape from the horrific life she has been leading. She longs to be free of her demanding husband. One evening, something in Michelle snaps. When she is found, Michelle is whimpering in a corner, her baby, Tanya, is screaming, and her husband is very dead.

Case Histories is an absorbing book, despite the profanity. It’s one mystery lovers will enjoy.
