Charm City:
A Tess Monaghan Novel #2

by Laura Lippman

Charm City, also known as Baltimore, is the setting for another installment of the reporter-turned-private eye Tess Monaghan series. Tess is hired to investigate how a story that wasn’t supposed to run made it to the front page of the local newspaper anyway. The paper is worried about lawsuits and the affect the story will have on the man who was trying to bring a pro basketball team to the city. As the story breaks, and the media fury multiplies, they delve into Wink Wynkowkis’s personal life. Wink commits suicide, leaving the paper with a mess on its hands.

Tess has to deal with people who are less than likable at the paper and who feel she’s an intruder. Her family is up to its neck in its own problems when her Uncle Spike is beaten inside his business and left comatose. Another mystery unfolds - someone is desperately trying to learn where the greyhound dog is that Uncle Spike has left in her care.

With several stories going along at the same time for Tess, the end brings unforeseen conclusions to everything and a few surprises. The way in which Tess handles her boyfriend, Crow, makes you want to yell at the book or get on the phone and tell her to stop before she makes a mistake. Charm City has a way of drawing you in when you least expect it.
